I’ve Been There is an educational website for young parents to find out more about pregnancy and parenting, as well as some of the mental health problems that are common during this time. It was launched in late 2013 by the then Minister for Mental Health, the Hon. Kevin Humphries MP.
The website was created as part of WayAhead’s Young and Parenting Project. Pregnancy and parenting during adolescence presents unique challenges that may contribute to and amplify risk factors for mental health problems or mental illness during the perinatal period, and the Young and Parenting Project was created to determine protective and risk factors for young parents during the perinatal period and develop an effective health promotion campaign to promote mental health and help-seeking, and prevent mental health problems and illness.
Young parents in NSW were consulted, along with a wide range of experts and recent literature on mental health and wellbeing among young parents. The website features a wide range of information from simple parenting tip sheets through to perinatal mental health service information and tips for family and friends supporting a young parent. Three videos exploring what it can be like as a young parent were also created and are available on the website and on Youtube.
